Atiku Abubakar, former vice president of Nigeria, warned that the country is on the verge of becoming a one-party dictatorship. In his Independence Day message, Abubakar called on Nigerians to reclaim their democracy from “the encroaching shadows of oppression.”

He expressed concern over the lack of genuinely free and fair elections, emphasizing the need for a strong opposition to counterbalance the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abubakar accused the APC of weakening opposition parties and manipulating the political landscape. He urged political leaders across party lines to unite and resist these threats to democracy, stressing that Nigeria needs a robust opposition to prevent the country from sliding into a one-party state.
