PSC Dismisses 19 Senior Police Officers, Reduces Ranks of 19 Others

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed 19 senior police officers and demoted another 19 following disciplinary actions taken during its recent plenary meeting in Abuja.

Among those dismissed are ten assistant superintendents, six deputy superintendents, two chief superintendents, and one superintendent.

The demotions include one assistant commissioner of police, one chief superintendent, two superintendents, two deputy superintendents, and 13 assistant superintendents.

Two Assistant Inspectors General of Police were also disciplined—one received a reprimand for failing to carry out lawful instructions, while the other was issued a warning for negligence.

PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani confirmed that several of the dismissed officers face prosecution by the Legal Unit of the Nigeria Police Force. The Commission also reviewed 23 appeals and petitions, nine legal matters, and deliberated on 110 pending disciplinary cases during the session.

PSC Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd.) stressed the need for expedited handling of police disciplinary cases to ensure fairness and accountability.

He warned officers against meddling in civil matters such as land disputes and marital issues, emphasizing that such cases should be handled by the courts, while the police focus on criminal matters and threats to life.

This decisive action reflects the Commission’s commitment to maintaining professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
