Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and His Brother Dies in Heartbreaking Car Accident
Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28 years old, has tragically passed away alongside his younger brother André Silva, following a terrible car accident in Spain. The crash happened early this morning, July 3rd, on the A-52 highway, near Cernadilla, in Zamora province, Spain.
Reports say Diogo and André were travelling in a Lamborghini when the car’s tyre burst, causing them to lose control while overtaking another vehicle. Their car crashed into a barrier and immediately caught fire. Despite efforts by emergency responders, both brothers lost their lives at the scene.
This tragedy comes just 11 days after Diogo’s wedding to his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, who is now left heartbroken with their three young children.
Football fans, teammates, and even world leaders have been sending messages of love and shock following the tragic news. Liverpool FC, where Diogo became a fan favourite, described the loss as “unbearable” and sent their support to both families.
Club manager Jurgen Klopp, visibly shaken, said, “Diogo wasn’t just a brilliant footballer, he was a wonderful father, a loving husband, and a true friend to many.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo’s Portugal teammate, shared his heartbreak online, writing: “It’s hard to accept this… just days ago we celebrated your wedding. Life can be so unfair.”
Portugal’s Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, also expressed his sorrow, calling their deaths “an enormous loss” for the country. Meanwhile, football clubs around Europe, including Manchester United, Chelsea, Wolves, and Atlético Madrid, all sent their condolences.
UEFA has announced there will be a minute of silence before the next Women’s Euro games to honour both Diogo and André.
