Achike Says PDP Should Fix Its Problems First Before Thinking of Coalition for 2027

Former Imo State Governor, Achike Udenwa, has shared his views on the recent push for a coalition between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political parties ahead of the 2027 elections. Udenwa believes the conversation about forming a coalition only exists because the PDP is currently battling internal issues. According to him, once the party resolves its crisis, there’ll be no need for any merger talks.

His comments come as speculations grow around former Vice President Atiku Abubakar reportedly offering Labour Party’s Peter Obi a running mate position in a proposed one-term agreement for 2027.

While speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Udenwa explained that the idea of a coalition might only make sense if the PDP fails to get back on track. He pointed out that Nigerians are hungry for a change, especially with how poorly the APC has performed, and if a coalition becomes the only path to deliver that change, then it might work to a certain degree.

However, he personally doesn’t think a coalition is the ideal route. In his words, the best path forward is for the PDP to regain its strength as the major opposition party. He suggested that instead of merging into a new structure, smaller parties should join forces under the PDP’s umbrella.

Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin is confident that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) will win big in the 2027 general elections. Speaking at the APC Northwest Zonal meeting organized by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, he called on party members to stay united and keep backing the President to ensure continued progress and electoral success.

Barau said, “Insha’Allah, we are headed for a landslide victory in 2027. Let’s keep working together, support the President, and stay united to reach our goals.” He credited the recent wave of defections from opposition parties to the APC’s growing appeal, which he linked to Tinubu’s leadership and efforts in addressing Nigeria’s security and economic problems.

“The increasing number of opposition members joining our party is no coincidence. It reflects the positive changes under President Tinubu’s leadership,” Barau noted. “Security in the Northwest has improved a lot. Areas that were once dangerous, like Birnin Gwari and parts of the Abuja-Kaduna corridor, are now safe and accessible.”

While acknowledging there is still work to be done, he stressed that the administration’s ongoing reforms and projects show they are moving in the right direction. “We are making progress. The President is working hard to tackle the nation’s challenges, especially insecurity in the North.” Barau also praised APC governors for their commitment to grassroots development, saying their efforts strengthen the party’s influence across the region.

He applauded APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for promoting unity and growth within the party, urging all members and leaders to continue collaborating. “With the strength we have now and the momentum building, it feels like no other party can match us, especially in the Northwest,” he said. “Let’s stay focused, united, and determined to deliver a big victory in 2027.”

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 presidential election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) North West zone has thrown its full support behind President Bola Tinubu. The endorsement came after a major stakeholders’ meeting in Kaduna, bringing together all the governors from the region, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Deputy Senate President, and former governors from the zone.

Other key figures at the gathering included the APC National Chairman, state party chairmen, federal and state legislators, ministers, heads of federal agencies, and senior political appointees. In a statement delivered by Governor Uba Sani, the APC North West Coordinating Governor, the zone reaffirmed its loyalty to the party and promised strong backing for President Tinubu’s vision of prosperity, fairness, and lasting progress for Nigeria.

They praised Tinubu’s leadership, highlighting his bold reforms and steady commitment to moving the country forward, especially in the North West. The statement pointed out that security has improved greatly under his watch, allowing farmers to return to their lands and communities to enjoy peace once again. The zone also noted its growing influence in the federal government, with 12 ministers, important national assembly roles, and key security appointments coming from the region—showing the inclusiveness of Tinubu’s administration.

Infrastructure development was another area of focus, with several major projects either being finished or underway across the North West, signaling a fresh chapter of growth for the region. The meeting concluded by emphasizing that the APC remains strong, united, and increasingly popular nationwide, thanks in large part to Nigerians’ approval of the President and the region’s APC governors.
