CSOs Raise Concerns Over Vote Buying in Edo State Elections

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (NCSSR) has reported widespread vote buying during the Edo State governorship election.

Voters were allegedly offered between ₦5,000 to ₦10,000 and food items like bread in several polling units across the state.

Despite the presence of security personnel, these incidents were widespread, including in Owan-East, Etsako-West, Egor, Oredo, and Owan-West LGAs.

The group commended voters’ peaceful conduct and acknowledged arrests made by the police in connection with vote trading.

The Federal Government has announced that Tuesday, October 1, will be observed as a public holiday to celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary.

This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on Saturday in Abuja.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended his warm wishes to all Nigerians, both at home and abroad, as the nation marks this significant milestone.

The minister praised the resilience and dedication of the Nigerian people, recognizing their unwavering efforts and contributions to the country’s development.

He highlighted that the sacrifices made by hardworking citizens are deeply valued and will not go unnoticed.
