Vector Discusses Childhood and Parental Support
Nigerian rapper Vector recently opened up about his upbringing and how his parents encouraged his passion for music. In an interview with Chude Jideonwo on the *With Chude* show, he said his childhood shaped his resilience and approach to life. “My childhood gave me the mindset of ‘whatever the weather, I’ll do what I want.’ I was stubborn and detached, like my mom and grandma would say. I always questioned why Yoruba elders were seen as always right, and I challenged that.”
Vector credited his parents for raising him and his siblings with balance, especially his sister, who has sickle cell anemia. He explained, “I learned to self-reflect. African parents tend to parent in a standard way, but mine didn’t show favoritism, even towards my sister, a sickle cell warrior. Despite her condition, she’s now a mother of two. That shows how well they cared for all of us.”
He also shared how his family embraced his identity as an artist. “At some point, my parents called me Vector the viper because that’s who I became. They supported my brother too, who’s a DJ. My parents were lenient but made us work for what we believed in. I felt loved, even though we didn’t have a luxurious upbringing.”
