Enugu State Takes Full Control of Electricity Market
The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has officially taken full control of the state’s electricity market after a transition from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). This move makes Enugu the first state in Nigeria to establish a sub-national electricity market. EERC issued licenses to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, a subsidiary of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), and Fedikore Limited, which will build a 10MW Independent Power Project (IPP) in the state.
EERC Chairman Chijioke Okonkwo highlighted the significance of this development, emphasizing that it marks the start of a more efficient and innovative electricity market for Enugu. He also praised the independence the commission has from political interference, ensuring fairness and transparency in regulating the sector. Mainpower and Fedikore expressed confidence in delivering improved services and driving industrial growth, signaling the beginning of an energy revolution in Enugu.
