Obasanjo Defends Igbos, Says All Major Ethnic Groups Attempted Secession

Published

on

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has argued that it is unfair to single out Igbos for their past attempt to secede, claiming that all of Nigeria’s major ethnic groups have, at one time, sought to break away from the country.

Obasanjo made these remarks while addressing a delegation of the League of Northern Democrats, led by ex-Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, at his library in Abeokuta on October 22.

Reflecting on the nation’s history, Obasanjo noted that the North had once strongly considered secession through the “Araba” movement.

He expressed frustration at the belief that an Igbo cannot become Nigeria’s president due to the Biafran secession attempt, calling such views “nonsense” and urging Nigerians to unite for the nation’s progress.
