Oshodi-apapa Bridge Collapses, Expressway Shut
Chaos erupted on Lagos’ Oshodi-Apapa Expressway Thursday morning when a portion of the Five-Star pedestrian bridge suddenly collapsed.
Miraculously, no lives were lost in the incident.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud crash around 6:30 a.m. as the bridge partially gave way, blocking a section of the road and sparking panic among commuters.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) swiftly responded to the scene, launching an investigation into the cause of the collapse.
Preliminary findings revealed that an articulated truck carrying heavy equipment had collided with the bridge earlier that morning, causing significant damage and cracks that ultimately led to the collapse.
LASEMA’s Director-General, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that the agency’s emergency response team worked tirelessly to cordon off the area, ensuring public safety.
“Heavy-duty equipment was deployed to evacuate the impediment and prevent secondary incidents,” Oke-Osanyintolu explained.
“Our primary focus now is to completely remove all concrete debris from the road, restoring safe passage for commuters.”
Recovery operations continued throughout the day, with LASEMA personnel working closely with other emergency responders, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigerian Police.
