UNIBEN Names Professor Edoba Omoregie as New Vice-Chancellor
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has appointed Professor Edoba Bright Omorogie, SAN, as its new Vice-Chancellor, succeeding Professor Lilian Salami, whose tenure will end on December 2, 2024.
Professor Omorogie’s appointment, announced by the Chairman of UNIBEN’s Governing Council, Prof. Shaibu Umaru, follows an intense selection process involving numerous candidates.
Prof. Umaru commended Omorogie’s qualifications and experience, noting that his academic contributions and leadership were standout qualities among the 27 professors who competed for the role.
Prof. Omoregie, a native of Benin City, was born on April 5, 1969.
He holds his undergraduate, master’s, and PhD degrees from UNIBEN, where he’s been a prominent figure in the Faculty of Law since he joined in 1998.
Specializing in Comparative Constitutional Law and Legislative Governance, he has contributed significantly to Nigerian legal scholarship.
A seasoned academic, he became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2021, a title reserved for distinguished legal professionals, marking a significant milestone in his career.
He was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1992, following his studies at the Nigerian Law School in Lagos.
Beyond UNIBEN, Professor Omoregie has been influential in the legislative sector, especially through his role as the Acting Director of Legislative Support Services at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), where he’s on leave from UNIBEN.
Since 2019, he has helped shape legislative research and policy analysis, providing support to Nigerian lawmakers in areas of governance and constitutional law.
He has also been a part of the UNIBEN/NILDS postgraduate program for over a decade, teaching courses on Legislative Drafting, Electoral Legal Frameworks, and the legislative process.
His publications in constitutional law and governance have been featured on both national and international platforms, making him an esteemed member of the legal academic community.
He is an active member of the International Bar Association, the Commonwealth Association of Legislative Counsel, the International Association of Legislation, and the Federal Union, connecting him with a global network of experts and practitioners.
The soon-to-be Vice-Chancellor is also a dedicated family man.
Widely travelled, he is happily married and a father, balancing his responsibilities with a commitment to advancing both UNIBEN’s legacy and Nigerian legislative knowledge.
