Nigeria Police Warns Against Misuse of Police Uniforms After Viral Video by VDM
The Nigeria Police Force has voiced serious concerns about the unauthorized use of police uniforms by content creators.
This issue came to the forefront following a viral video from a popular online figure, Mr Martins Otse, known widely as “VDM,” who shared footage wearing an official police uniform on his social media platforms.
The Force has now launched an investigation to uncover the source of these uniforms and identify how VDM acquired them.
The Police emphasized that such acts constitute a criminal offence under Nigerian law, citing Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, both of which classify the unauthorized use of police insignia, uniforms, or related symbols as illegal, punishable by law.
In a post shared on their X account, the Police firmly stated that while they value and support the young Nigerians in the creative industry, the misuse of their uniforms for entertainment or content creation is strictly prohibited.
According to them, such acts disrespect the integrity of the Force, undermining the trust and values that the uniform represents.
For the Police force, the uniform isn’t merely a piece of clothing – it’s a symbol of authority and service, and its misuse is seen as damaging to the public’s perception of their role.
As the Nigeria Police continues its investigation, they’ve issued a clear warning to all content creators and the public to refrain from unauthorized use of police attire or symbols in any form.
