CAF Imposes Additional Sanctions on Libya Football Federation Following Nigeria Incident

Published

on

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed fresh penalties on the Libya Football Federation (LFF), fining them an additional $20,000 and mandating that two of Libya’s upcoming matches be played behind closed doors due to recent violent incidents.

This comes on the heels of a separate controversy during Nigeria’s visit for an AFCON qualifier on October 15. The Nigerian team, scheduled to play Libya in Benghazi, encountered severe delays and lacked food and water for over 20 hours at Al Abaq airport. In response, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) withdrew the Super Eagles from the match.

CAF initially awarded Nigeria three points and fined Libya $50,000 for failing to meet hospitality requirements, sparking an appeal from Libya to reverse the decision. While the appeal remains pending, CAF’s new sanctions are unrelated but reflect further scrutiny of the LFF’s conduct in recent matches.

Mohamed Salah has officially extended his stay at Liverpool, putting an end to the buzz around his future.

The club confirmed the new deal on Friday, calming fears among fans as the 32-year-old’s previous contract was set to run out this summer.

Top clubs like PSG and several teams in Saudi Arabia had shown interest, but Salah has chosen to stay with the Reds, signing a two-year deal reportedly worth £380,000 a week.

Interestingly, this move sees Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, bending a long-standing rule. They’ve typically avoided handing out new deals to players over 30, but Salah’s importance to the team clearly tipped the scales.

Sources say negotiations had dragged on for a while as Salah and his agent, Ramy Abbas, pushed for better terms. He had initially asked for a three-year extension, and while he didn’t get that, FSG still made an exception to keep their star man at Anfield.

Currently on loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray for the 2024/25 season, the Nigerian striker has been in fine form, netting his 21st league goal in their 2-0 victory over Samsunspor on Friday.

Galatasaray are eager to keep him permanently, but the €75 million release clause could make things complicated.

Meanwhile, top Premier League clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal are keeping a close eye on the 26-year-old.

Speaking to Galatasaray’s official website, Osimhen shared how much he’s enjoying his time at the club and expressed deep appreciation for the support he’s received.

He added that he’s committed to helping the team fight for their fifth star and will only decide on his next move once the season wraps up.

“Whatever happens, Galatasaray will always have a special place in my heart,” he said.
