Trump Secures North Carolina, Boosting Republican Hold as Electoral Race Tightens

Published

on

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed victory in North Carolina, a crucial battleground state, securing the state’s 16 electoral votes for Republicans.

Voters across all states, plus the District of Columbia, cast ballots in the presidential race between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. With 270 electoral votes needed to win, most states award all their votes to the popular vote winner, though Maine and Nebraska split theirs.

Polls had shown Vice President Kamala Harris narrowing Trump’s lead in North Carolina since entering the race after President Joe Biden stepped aside.

Despite hopes that Harris would gain support from well-educated voters, Trump made notable gains with Black voters, young voters, and independents. Exit polls show Black voters made up 19% of North Carolina’s electorate, with Trump capturing 12% of their vote—a significant increase from 2020, especially among Black men.

As of now, Trump leads with 246 electoral votes to Harris’s 189. His win in North Carolina reinforces the strength of his MAGA movement, marking his third consecutive win in the state despite facing multiple impeachments and indictments since 2021.

For Harris, the path to victory now hinges on key blue-wall states—Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin—where Trump currently holds a lead.
