Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Killing Wife During Argument

An Ikeja High Court has sentenced Akinwale Akinlabi to 12 years imprisonment for the manslaughter of his wife, Tope, following a domestic dispute.

The tragic incident occurred on February 2, 2020, at Ijaiye Ojojoro, Lagos, during an argument about the volume of a radio. Akinlabi pushed Tope, causing her to hit her head on the edge of a table. She succumbed to her injuries while being taken to the hospital.

Charged with manslaughter by the Lagos State Government, Akinlabi pleaded not guilty. However, Justice Oyindamola Ogala ruled on November 25, 2024, that the prosecution provided sufficient evidence beyond a reasonable doubt.

“The prosecution established the elements of manslaughter, showing that the accused’s unlawful actions led to the victim’s death,” the judge stated. While noting that the death was unintentional, the judge highlighted evidence, such as scars on the victim’s back, which corroborated witness testimonies.

Taking into account the circumstances of the case and the plea from the defense counsel, Justice Ogala sentenced Akinlabi to 12 years imprisonment, effective from February 3, 2020, the date of his initial incarceration.
