Obasanjo Responds to Gowon’s Revelation About Plea to Abacha for His Life

Published

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has thanked former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd.), for pleading with the late General Sani Abacha to spare his life during Abacha’s regime.

Speaking at the Plateau Interdenominational Unity Christmas Carols and Praise Festival in Jos South, Gowon revealed he had written a letter to Abacha, urging him to spare Obasanjo, emphasizing that leadership should be used for good. Gowon expressed joy that Obasanjo not only survived imprisonment but went on to become Nigeria’s president in 1999.

Reacting at the same event, Obasanjo admitted he was unaware of Gowon’s efforts until the revelation. “When I came out of prison, I thanked those who appealed for my release. But I did not know you wrote a letter for my release until you said it yesterday; I thank you for that,” Obasanjo said.

Obasanjo’s release followed Abacha’s death in 1998 after spending three years in prison over an alleged coup plot.

Nigerian businessman Isaac Fayose has spoken about what he considers one of the country’s biggest problems, stating that many Nigerians are worried about government taxation, insecurity, and the increasing rate of kidnappings for ransom.

He lamented the situation and criticized the government, arguing that these issues have become deeply rooted and that there appears to be no lasting solution in sight.

According to him “In Nigeria we have two governments. One is collecting tax, the other one is collecting ransom. Both of them have one thing in common which is to make life difficult for their people.

The one that is collecting tax without doing anything will come and share you rice and semolina. The one that is collecting ransom is doing giveaway on social media.”
