Senator Dickson Vows Tax Reform Bills Will Pass Despite Widespread Opposition
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa West), has assured Nigerians that the National Assembly will pass the controversial tax reform bills despite opposition from various quarters.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, December 2, 2024, Dickson likened the situation to the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), stating, “The heavens didn’t fall then, and they won’t now.”
The tax reform bills, transmitted by President Tinubu on October 3, 2024, have faced criticism from governors, civil society groups, and some lawmakers. While the Senate has already passed the bills for a second reading, the House of Representatives is yet to act.
Dickson highlighted the importance of correcting tax anomalies, emphasizing, “Taxes from Bayelsa State should not be paid to Lagos State. This is an opportunity to ensure fairness and promote the national interest.”
