Six Suspects, Including a Chinese National, Arrested for Illegal Mining in Anambra
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, in collaboration with the Federal Mines Office, has apprehended six individuals, including a Chinese national, for illegal mining activities in the state.
The arrests took place following a tip-off about unauthorized mining operations at an unlicensed site in Odele Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area.
The suspects have been identified as Udoka Nwankwo (25), Amaka Samuel (18), Onyi Ijeoma (45), Chimezie Aniefuna (25), Chinaza Omrba (18), and a Chinese national known only as “Babajeje” (47).
NSCDC spokesperson, SC Edwin Okadigbo, explained that the suspects were taken into custody for mining without proper licenses, evading surface rent, haulage fees, and royalties, violating Section 33 of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act.
State Commandant Olatunde Maku emphasized the NSCDC’s determination to combat illegal mining, describing it as a severe threat to the country’s economy and a source of significant revenue losses for the Federal Government.
