The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have detained a 34-year-old Nigerian man, Maxwell Nweke, in Tripura, India, for illegally attempting to cross the border into Bangladesh.

A BSF spokesperson disclosed on Monday, December 9, 2024, that the arrest followed specific intelligence that led to the establishment of a checkpoint at Kaiyedhepa in the Sepahijala district. Maxwell was observed acting suspiciously along the India-Bangladesh border road when he attempted to cross the border.

During the operation, BSF troops also apprehended an Indian tout, Suraj Prasad, from Amtali in West Tripura. Prasad, who tried to flee the scene on a motorcycle, is recognized as a notorious tout actively pursued by the BSF for his involvement in cross-border crimes.

The BSF has intensified surveillance and operations along the 856 km India-Bangladesh border in Tripura to prevent infiltration, exfiltration, and other cross-border crimes, including smuggling, the spokesperson stated.

The Nigerian national and the Indian tout, along with other apprehended foreigners, have been handed over to local police for investigation. They will subsequently be presented before the courts.

He lamented the situation and criticized the government, arguing that these issues have become deeply rooted and that there appears to be no lasting solution in sight.

According to him “In Nigeria we have two governments. One is collecting tax, the other one is collecting ransom. Both of them have one thing in common which is to make life difficult for their people.

The one that is collecting tax without doing anything will come and share you rice and semolina. The one that is collecting ransom is doing giveaway on social media.”
