Former Match of the Day presenter Des Lynam has called on Manchester United legend Gary Neville to make a surprising return to management and take over from current boss Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford.

Lynam believes Neville is the ideal candidate to steer the struggling club back on course.

Neville, who last managed Valencia in 2016, has since built a prominent career as a pundit. Despite his limited managerial experience, Lynam insists Neville’s deep connection to the club makes him the right fit.

Manchester United are languishing in 13th place in the Premier League, with mounting pressure on Amorim following his recent comments labelling the current squad one of the worst in the club’s 147-year history.

In a column for The Telegraph, Lynam passionately defended his view. “Neville is Manchester United through and through,” he wrote.

“He feels the pain of their struggles as much as the fans. His strong personality and presence in the dressing room would make a huge impact. I’ve believed this for years, and I still think he’s the man for the job.”
