French Director Christophe Ruggia Found Guilty of Assaulting Adèle Haenel
In a landmark verdict for France’s #MeToo movement film director Christophe Ruggia has been found guilty of sexually assaulting actress Adèle Haenel during her early teenage years.
The court sentenced Ruggia to four years in prison, with two years suspended and two years to be served under house arrest with an electronic bracelet. He was also ordered to pay €15,000 in damages to Haenel and €20,000 for her psychological therapy.
Haenel, now 35, accused Ruggia of inappropriate touching and harassment between 2001 and 2004, starting when she was 12.
The incidents occurred during and after the filming of “Les Diables” (“The Devils”), a film directed by Ruggia in which Haenel played a leading role. She alleged that Ruggia used his position to isolate and abuse her during frequent meetings at his home.
Ruggia, 60, denied the allegations and plans to appeal the verdict. His lawyers criticized the decision, claiming it was unjustified.
