Amorim Calls Out Dorgu for Careless Challenge That Led to Red Card

Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has criticized defender Patrick Dorgu for his careless challenge that led to a red card against Ipswich Town on Wednesday.

Dorgu, who joined United from Lecce in January, was making only his third appearance when he was sent off in the 43rd minute for a reckless tackle on Omari Hutchinson. Referee Darren England initially gave a yellow but upgraded it to a red after a VAR review.

Despite being a man down, United secured a 3-2 win with goals from Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire, and an own goal by Sam Morsy. Jaden Philogene scored twice for Ipswich, including the game’s opener, where Dorgu played a role.

The red card means Dorgu will miss three domestic matches, starting with the FA Cup fifth-round clash against Fulham.

Speaking after the game, Amorim acknowledged the defender’s talent but pointed out his mistake.

“Patrick Dorgu is ready for the Premier League. He has shown that in recent games,” Amorim said via Fabrizio Romano. “Any player can make a mistake like that. He was going for the ball but was maybe a bit careless in how he went into the challenge.”

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane didn’t hold back after the club’s 4-1 loss to Newcastle, saying manager Ruben Amorim might not have realised just how poor the squad really is.

Newcastle dominated the match, with goals from Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimarães, and a brace from Harvey Barnes. Alejandro Garnacho’s equaliser was the only bright moment for United, who now sit 14th on the Premier League table.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane said Amorim must be baffled by the level of performance from his players.

“He’s probably scratching his head right now,” Keane said. “He can’t come out and say it, but I don’t think he knew just how bad this team really is. The mistakes they’re making, the lack of energy — it’s shocking.”

Keane also suggested that the Premier League might be proving tougher than Amorim expected.

“He’s done his research, sure, but I think this league has caught him off guard. He’s walked into a mess and probably didn’t see it coming.”
