Will Smith Releases First Album in 20 Years

Will Smith, the renowned actor and rapper, has made a notable return to the music scene with the release of his album “Based on a True Story” on March 28, 2025. This marks his first musical project in two decades, following his 2005 album “Lost and Found.” The new album delves into significant personal events, including the widely publicized 2022 Oscars incident where Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock, as well as offering insights into his marriage with Jada Pinkett Smith.
The opening track, “Int. Barbershop – Day,” sets the tone by directly addressing the Oscars controversy. In this song, Smith engages in a candid dialogue about his legacy and public perception, featuring lyrics that reflect on the slap and its aftermath. He raps, “I heard he won the Oscar but he had to give it back,” acknowledging the incident and the subsequent fallout.
Another notable track, “You Lookin’ for Me?,” explores Smith’s personal life, touching upon his complex relationship with his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The song suggests that their marriage is “complicated” and urges others to mind their own business, highlighting the couple’s desire for privacy amidst public scrutiny.
“Based on a True Story” comprises 14 tracks and features collaborations with several artists, including DJ Jazzy Jeff, B. Simone, India Martínez, Teyana Taylor, Joyner Lucas, and Smith’s son, Jaden Smith. These collaborations bring a diverse range of styles and perspectives to the album, enriching its overall composition.
