FCT Minister Nyesom Wike says he’s willing to forgive suspended Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara, but only if Fubara takes responsibility and offers a sincere apology.

Wike, who has been at odds with Fubara since he became governor in 2023, made this known during a media chat in Abuja. Their feud led to a major political crisis in Rivers, splitting the state assembly into factions and raising security concerns.

As the tension worsened, President Bola Tinubu stepped in, suspending Fubara for six months, declaring a state of emergency, and appointing a sole administrator to stabilize the situation.

Speaking on efforts to restore peace, Wike said no genuine steps have been taken by those close to Fubara. He questioned the sincerity of those claiming to want peace but doing nothing meaningful about it.

“I’ve asked her to name one elder in Rivers State working closely with the governor who has actually tried to bring peace,” he said. “If nothing is done, we’ll end up back where we started. That doesn’t help anyone.”

He also revealed that once President Tinubu got involved, the impeachment notice from the state assembly was immediately withdrawn. For Wike, the door is still open — but only if Fubara is honest and willing to make peace.

“Rather than play the ostrich and cover up clear terrorism as mere farmer-herder clashes, the Nigerian state has a responsibility to invade the camps of armed marauders who hide under the cloak of herdsmen of whatever ethnicity, and who invade defenceless communities and gleefully massacre unarmed men, women and children.”
