Wenger Says Messi Is Important but Olise Performs Best for Club World Cup
Former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has picked Bayern Munich star Michael Olise over Lionel Messi when it comes to the standout stats at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup. Though Wenger acknowledged Messi’s huge impact on Inter Miami, he made it clear that, in terms of numbers, Olise has been the tournament’s top performer so far.
Speaking ahead of Inter Miami’s Club World Cup Round of 16 clash against PSG, Wenger told journalist Jose Armando that while Messi may not have the best stats, his influence in Major League Soccer cannot be denied. “Messi doesn’t have the best numbers in this tournament, but his presence is why Inter Miami even made it here,” Wenger said. “Without him, they wouldn’t qualify. The difference he brings is clear.”
He praised Michael Olise for his impressive display, pointing out that Bayern Munich would still progress even without him, but Inter Miami’s story is different with Messi. Olise has scored three goals and made two assists in just three matches, while Messi has managed one goal from three appearances.
