Lionel Messi could be set to leave Inter Miami before the 2026 World Cup kicks off. This comes after Miami’s heavy 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup round of 16, raising fresh questions about Messi’s future with the MLS side.

The 38-year-old’s current deal with Miami is due to expire at the end of 2025. Though there’s an option to extend it for another year, that clause hasn’t been activated yet. Reports suggest Messi has paused talks over a new contract. According to Argentine journalist Esteban Edul, the World Cup winner is considering his next move carefully and may not extend his stay in Miami.

Sources close to the player say Messi is eager to spend the final stretch of his career in a more competitive league, especially with the 2026 World Cup just around the corner. The Argentina captain is said to be focused on staying in top form as his country prepares to defend their title when the tournament kicks off in North America.
