Former Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has shared his thoughts on Lionel Messi’s future, saying the legendary Argentine will likely hang up his boots after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Petit also dismissed ongoing rumours about Messi making a return to Barcelona, saying there’s no space for him in the current setup. According to him, young talent Lamine Yamal has already stepped into Messi’s shoes at the club.

Speaking in an interview, Petit said, “Messi has been linked with a return to Barca, but I don’t see it happening. Yamal won’t be sitting on the bench, and while Messi could play as a No. 10, we know he doesn’t run much anymore. Can Barcelona handle that in midfield?” He added that Messi’s focus will likely be on leading Argentina one last time in the 2026 World Cup before calling time on his career. Messi left Barcelona for PSG after contract talks with the Catalan side broke down.
