Lionel Messi has admitted he is unsure about featuring at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Argentina captain, who scored twice in a 3-0 victory over Venezuela on Thursday, said he no longer enjoys the game when he isn’t at full fitness.

At 38, he acknowledged that it would be natural to consider stepping away from the biggest stage. “I’ve said before, I don’t think I’ll play another World Cup. At my age, it’s normal to think that way,” Messi told TyC Sports.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner explained that his decision will depend on how his body feels over the coming months. “I’ll take it match by match, finish the season, do preseason, and in six months, I’ll see how I feel,” he added. It could mark the last time Messi plays a World Cup qualifier in front of home fans.
