Gyan accuses Osimhen of faking injury to skip Super Eagles vs South Africa match
Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has sparked controversy after accusing Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen of pretending to be injured.
Osimhen was absent from Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against South Africa in the 2026 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, having left camp earlier to rejoin Galatasaray following a leg problem he reportedly picked up in the Super Eagles’ narrow 1-0 win over Rwanda last weekend. His club later confirmed he had suffered an ankle ligament injury, but Gyan openly questioned the legitimacy of that claim.
Speaking in an interview, the ex-Black Stars striker suggested that Osimhen may have been pressured by his club to avoid further involvement with Nigeria. “I’ve seen these things before,” Gyan said. “Maybe someone at the club told him, ‘We paid a lot for you, the Champions League is coming, we don’t want you risking yourself in Africa. Go there, play a little, then pretend to be injured and return.’”
