Liverpool manager Arne Slot has revealed that the club will honour the late Diogo Jota’s contract by paying the remaining wages to his family.

Jota tragically lost his life in a car accident in Northern Spain on July 3, alongside his brother, Andre Silva. He was 28 years old and left behind his wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three young children.

The Portugal international, who joined Liverpool in 2020, was earning about £140,000 a week and still had two years left on his contract, worth close to £14 million. According to Slot, the club’s owners have decided to ensure that Jota’s family receives the full amount.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Slot praised the gesture, saying: “I was proud of how the fans responded, but the ownership too. People often criticise owners, like they do managers, but in this case the way they handled the situation is really special. Paying his wife and children all the money left on his deal is something many might assume is normal, but in football, it rarely happens.”
