Trump Plans to Impose 100% Tariff on Foreign Movies to Support Hollywood
US President Donald Trump has announced a plan to impose a 100% tariff on foreign films brought into the country. This decision could shake up the entertainment industry.
The proposal, revealed during a recent policy briefing, is aimed at protecting and boosting the American film sector, which he argues has faced tough competition from international productions. If implemented, it would mean any movie made outside the United States would cost double to be imported and screened in American theaters.
Supporters of the move believe it could create more opportunities for homegrown filmmakers, push Hollywood to dominate the local box office, and keep profits within the country. On the other hand, critics warn it could limit movie variety, reduce cultural exchange, and even cause trade disputes with countries that heavily export films to the US.
Hollywood insiders are also split. Some see it as a chance to strengthen American creativity, while others worry that it could isolate the industry from the global market and make international collaborations harder.
It has been reported that Bola Ahmed Tinubu was absent at the commissioning of the Opebi-Mende Link Bridge, which took place on April 8, 2026.
However, Senate President Godswill Akpabio represented the President and carried out the ceremony.
As he commissioned the project, he stated “On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I commission these projects.”
Residents of Lagos should prepare for traffic disruptions as several roads will be closed due to the visit of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is set to commission infrastructural projects.
The commissioning will take place on April 8 and 9, 2026.

Opebi, Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Ojota, and Victoria Island.
Affected areas on Thursday (April 9):
Lekki-Epe Expressway, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, and Ajegunle.
Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes and expect heavy traffic during these periods.
