The Federal Government has lodged a complaint with the Nigerian Press Council against Daily Trust Newspapers for a report alleging Nigeria’s involvement in an LGBTQ-themed agreement signed in Samoa last November. The report claimed that the agreement included clauses obliging underdeveloped and developing nations to support LGBTQ rights to access a substantial funding package and other aids from advanced societies. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, along with Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, addressed these concerns following a Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

Idris emphasized the government’s assertion that the report was misleading and demanded an apology from Daily Trust for the harm caused. He underscored the importance of accurate reporting in upholding national interests and ensuring informed public discourse. The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to press freedom while emphasizing the responsibility of media to report truthfully and responsibly.

AGF Lateef Fagbemi echoed the sentiment, noting that the government seeks to resolve the issue through peaceful means before considering further action. He highlighted the availability of government ministries for clarifications under the Freedom of Information Act, urging journalists to verify information with relevant authorities before publication. The government’s approach aims to uphold media freedom while addressing misinformation that could disrupt public trust and national stability.
