I’m an Igbo man according to my bloodline – Buju

Published

on

Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton has recently disclosed his Igbo heritage during an appearance on the ‘Drink Champs’ podcast, hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN. Banton revealed that his Maroon tribe, known for its resistance against British colonial rule, has origins in the Igbo people of Nigeria.

In the podcast, Banton expressed concern over the current Jamaican government’s actions, which he claims are endangering their ancestral lands.

He criticized the government for permitting foreign interests, including Chinese entities, to encroach upon the Cockpit region—a sacred and historically significant area for the Maroons. According to Banton, this move threatens to displace the Maroons, who have long been protectors of their land and culture.

Banton’s remarks highlight a broader issue of land rights and preservation of Indigenous heritage in Jamaica. His statement underscores the ongoing struggle of the Maroons to safeguard their traditional lands and way of life against external pressures and encroachment.

Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae goes viral after sharing her thoughts on the current state of Afrobeats, stating that the genre has stalled.

She expressed concern about how Afrobeats is becoming too repetitive and urged artists to experiment with new sounds.

“Afrobeats and African music need to evolve. It needs to evolve in a direction that is fearless, and I think right now artists have made so much money from a certain type of sound that they are afraid to step out of the boundaries because they are probably more focused on the financial aspect of it. And as a result, I think Afrobeats has stalled.”

The singer then gave an example, commenting on how Rema did just that with his recent album “HEIS”.
