Afe Babalola Criticizes Age Limit for University Entry
Aare Afe Babalola, Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, has criticized the Federal Government’s decision to prevent students under 18 from taking the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) exams, as well as from gaining admission to universities.
Babalola described the policy as retrogressive, arguing that it stifles the potential of young, talented individuals who could contribute to solving the nation’s challenges. He emphasized that universities should have the autonomy to admit students based on merit and exceptional ability, regardless of age, as is the practice in countries like the UK, Australia, and Norway.
Babalola also highlighted that maturity is not solely determined by age but by mindset and emotional intelligence. He pointed out that many young students, including those who have excelled at Afe Babalola University, demonstrate exceptional academic potential and should not be hindered by rigid age restrictions. Babalola urged the government to reconsider the policy, warning that it could hamper the development of gifted children and impede the country’s progress.

FCT Teachers Strike Over Unpaid Arrears
Teachers in FCT government schools have started an indefinite strike over the non-payment of 60% of owed arrears by the Area Councils. This strike follows a 14-day ultimatum from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and continues previous actions demanding overdue payments and allowances.
The NUT, led by Abdullahi Shafa, resumed the strike after the councils failed to meet their financial obligations. The strike will persist until the councils address demands for the remaining wage arrears, salary increases, and allowances. Parents are advised to keep their children at home, and teachers are instructed to follow union directives. Efforts to reach officials for comment were unsuccessful.
