In Toronto, Canada, police have detained Amaka Sunnberger, a Nigerian woman who recently made headlines for threatening to harm Nigerians of Yoruba and Benin heritage in a viral video. The arrest occurred on Sunday, September 1, 2024.

According to the police statement, Sunnberger faces charges of making threats and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 2201 Finch Avenue West on Monday, September 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in courtroom 107.

The authorities are treating this case as a potential hate crime. The video’s inflammatory remarks have provoked widespread outrage, leading the Nigerian House of Representatives to formally request her prosecution.

Nigerian lawmakers have reached out to the Canadian government, urging them to pursue legal action against Sunnberger for inciting violence and potentially committing acts of genocide against the Yoruba and Benin communities.

Additionally, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has submitted a petition to Brampton Mayor Honourable Patrick Brown, seeking support for the prosecution and emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
