British-Nigerian Actress Laura Adebisi: ‘Nigeria Was Never Meant to Be a Country’
British-Nigerian actress Laura Lake Adebisi has made a bold and thought-provoking statement regarding Nigeria’s existence as a nation, sparking widespread conversations online.
According to the actress, Nigeria was never meant to be a country, given the deep-seated ideological differences between the northern and southern regions.
In a viral video, Adebisi expressed her dissatisfaction with the colonial foundations of Nigeria, claiming that the country was artificially created and continues to bear the harmful legacy of its colonial past.
She pointed out that the cultural and political divide between the North and South is too significant to ignore, suggesting that these differences should have prevented Nigeria from existing as a unified state.
She further accused the British government of playing a significant role in Nigeria’s internal struggles, particularly referencing the Nigerian Civil War, also known as the Biafran War.
Adebisi stated that when the Eastern region attempted to secede and establish the Republic of Biafra, the British government, eager to maintain control over Nigeria’s resources, allegedly empowered the central government to suppress the secessionist movement.
“The footprints of colonialism are still all over Nigeria,” Adebisi asserted. “The country itself, its borders, its very existence, are all results of colonial interference.
The British wanted to keep Nigeria together, not for the sake of unity, but to continue exploiting the country’s abundant resources. Even today, the remnants of that era remain in Nigeria’s political landscape and geography.”
Adebisi’s remarks have reignited debates surrounding Nigeria’s colonial history and the lingering effects of foreign influence.
Her passionate critique underscores the complexities of Nigeria’s formation and the ongoing challenges that stem from its colonial roots.
Through her statements, she calls for a deeper reflection on the nation’s identity, urging citizens to consider the long-term impacts of the ideologies and systems imposed by colonial powers.
