Ahead of the nationwide protests scheduled for October, Nigerian youths on Sunday warmly welcomed activist and key organizer Omoyele Sowore upon his return to the country.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate, is leading the charge for the protests, dubbed “Fearless,” alongside the rights advocacy group Take It Back Movement.

The aim of the demonstrations is to bring more attention to the severe economic hardships affecting millions of citizens.

Upon his arrival at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport in Lagos, Sowore was reportedly detained by the Department of State Services (DSS).

His arrest is believed to be connected to his involvement in the EndBadGovernance protests, which took place across the country from August 1 to 10.

After a brief detention, Sowore was released and greeted by a large crowd of enthusiastic youths at the airport.

The protest movement he is spearheading seeks to confront the Nigerian government about the ongoing economic struggles that many citizens are facing.
