Imagine a girl in her bedroom, headphones on, lost in her own world, making beats with a simple laptop and a big dream.

Fast forward a few years, and that same girl is standing on global stages, winning Grammys, and getting known from legends like Rihanna and Drake.

That girl is Tems. Her story isn’t just a rise to fame, it’s a masterclass in staying true to yourself and letting the world catch up.

Her story from a regular girl in Lagos to shutting down international stages isn’t just inspiring, it shows that with raw talent, hard work, and being yourself, anything is possible.

Let’s break down the journey of Temilade Openiyi, the woman we all know as Tems, and how she rose to the top.

Growing Up with Music in Her Blood

Tems was born on June 11, 1995, in Lagos. Though she spent a little part of her childhood in the UK, Lagos is where she grew up and became the person we know today.

Her house was always filled with music. Her mum loved playing old-school Nigerian songs and soulful jams, and artists like Asa inspired her a lot.

As a teenager, her love for music grew stronger. She joined the choir in school and people started noticing her deep, unique voice.

It wasn’t the usual high-pitched voice many expected, it was different, and it was powerful.

Choosing Music Over Everything Else

Tems studied Economics in South Africa, but after school, she knew numbers and her 9 to 5 office job wasn’t for her. Music was calling.

In 2018, she took a bold step: she quit her job to focus fully on music.

It wasn’t easy because her family wasn’t totally in support, but Tems was determined.

She didn’t just sing, she taught herself how to produce music.

In her little home studio, with basic equipment, she started making the kind of songs she wanted to hear.

The First Big Step: “Mr. Rebel”

In 2018, Tems dropped her first single, “Mr. Rebel.” The song wasn’t like anything else on the radio.

It was raw, real, and had a vibe that grabbed your attention. Her voice was bold, and her lyrics were deep.

People started paying attention. She wasn’t trying to fit in with the usual Nigerian pop sound – she was doing her own thing.

Her fanbase, who call themselves the “Rebel Gang,” started growing. They loved her for being different.

“Try Me”: The Song That Blew Her Up

In 2019, Tems released “Try Me.” This was the song that changed everything for her.

The track was all about fighting back, staying strong, and not letting anyone underestimate you.

The chorus – “You don’t try me, try me” – became an anthem.

The song went viral, playing everywhere from clubs to car stereos.

People who hadn’t heard of her before now knew her name.

Tems was no longer just an underground artist, she was now a star on the rise.

The Game Changer: “Essence” with Wizkid

Then came the big one. In 2020, Wizkid featured Tems on his song “Essence.”

The song was smooth, sexy, and fresh. Tems’ voice on that track was magic, and the world felt it.

“Essence” became a global hit, the first Nigerian song to enter the Billboard Hot 100.

Even big celebrities like Rihanna and Drake were vibing to it.

People who had never listened to Afrobeat before started paying closer attention.

This song wasn’t just a hit, it was a movement. It showed that Nigerian music could take over the world, and Tems was at the center of it.

Grammy Glory and Worldwide Fame

Tems kept climbing higher. In 2022, she worked with Future and Drake on the song “Wait for U.”

That track won her a Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance. She made history as the first female Nigerian artist to win a Grammy.

This win wasn’t just for her, it was for every young Nigerian girl dreaming of making it big.

Tems showed that if she could do it, they could too.

What Makes Tems Special?

  • Tems is different. She doesn’t follow trends, and she doesn’t pretend to be someone she’s not.
  • Her sound is unique, her style is simple yet bold, and her lyrics are real.
  • She sings about freedom, strength, and staying true to yourself.
  • She wants her music to empower people, especially women.

She once said she wants girls to know they can be whatever they want.

And that’s exactly what she’s doing; breaking barriers and setting new standards.

Tems isn’t just getting started, she’s performing on big stages, working with top international artists, and exploring new sounds.

It’s clear she’s going to be one of the greatest artists representing Africa.

A Lagos Girl Who Took Over the World

Tems’ story is a big impact that your dreams are valid, no matter where you come from.

From making beats in her bedroom to winning a Grammy, she’s shown us that being yourself and staying consistent can open doors you never imagined.

She’s not just a star, she’s an icon in the making.

And if there’s one thing we know, it’s that Tems is here to stay.

A fun thing to know about Tems is that she used to be very shy and kept to herself.

In fact, while growing up, she often avoided singing in front of people because she thought her voice was too different.

She once revealed that she felt her deep voice wasn’t what people expected, but that uniqueness is what now makes her stand out globally.

Also, she loves anime and often talks about how it influences her creativity.

If you’re an anime fan, you might just have something in common with her.

Mr. Macaroni, a well-known Nigerian comedian, skit maker, and activist, has shared why he refuses to acknowledge Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu publicly.

This revelation came after an X user, @OyesileJohn, criticized Macaroni for ignoring the Governor.

The user posted, “To d’ifa fun a certain Macaroni who, in an attempt to please the mob, snubbed the governor of Lagos state. Omo ase.”

In his response, Mr. Macaroni doubled down on his stance, saying he would continue to ignore Governor Sanwo-Olu, whom he referred to as “your Governor.”

For every time you do, I will send you to your masters.”
