In a recent development, 180 members of the minority caucus in the 10th House of Representatives have endorsed a motion put forward by lawmaker Obi Aguocha calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Aguocha, who represents the Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency, shared this decision during a caucus meeting on Monday.

He urged his colleagues to take a definitive stand on the ongoing discussions surrounding Kanu and to seek a political resolution to this pressing issue.

This move by the caucus follows Aguocha’s recent engagement with former President Muhammadu Buhari and his successful efforts to rally support from 50 colleagues across various political parties as well as the southeast caucus of the National Assembly.

In his speech, Aguocha stressed the need for unity within the minority caucus, asserting that resolving Kanu’s case is critical for maintaining national peace, stability, and unity.

He advocated for immediate and strategic dialogue with relevant stakeholders to pursue a peaceful and political resolution to the situation, which holds significant implications for Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.

Aguocha highlighted the advantages of addressing the situation through dialogue and reconciliation rather than extending legal processes or confrontation.

He believes that a political solution could lead to improved national integration and restore trust among different communities.

He remarked, “Today, the opposition parties have taken a decisive stance on issues including Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, planned protests, security concerns, deteriorating infrastructure, and economic challenges.”

The endorsement of Aguocha’s motion reflects the collective stance of the minority caucus, which includes members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 115 seats, the Labour Party (LP) with 35 seats, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with 19 seats, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with 5 seats, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 2 seats, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) with 2 seats, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with 2 seats.

This call to action underscores the critical role legislative bodies play in promoting peace and stability within the nation.

The caucus remains dedicated to advancing initiatives that foster justice, equity, and harmonious coexistence throughout Nigeria.
