2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana Secure Big Wins
Here are the results from Match Day 5 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the African zone, played on Friday.
In Group C, Nigeria secured a 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali, thanks to two first-half goals from Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen. The win moved Eric Chelle’s team to fourth place with six points. South Africa also defeated Lesotho 2-0 to take the top spot in the group.
In Group G, Algeria earned a 3-1 victory over Botswana, while Burundi lost 0-1 to Côte d’Ivoire. Ghana delivered a dominant performance, crushing Chad 5-0, and Guinea played to a goalless draw with Somalia.
Group H saw Equatorial Guinea claim a 2-0 win against São Tomé and Príncipe. In Group A, Burkina Faso thrashed Djibouti 4-1, while Egypt edged Ethiopia 1-0.
In Group B, DR Congo secured a narrow 1-0 win over South Sudan. In Group E, Morocco, the 2025 AFCON hosts, defeated Niger 2-1.
Football legend Gary Lineker shares his thoughts on who will win the Premier League title this season.
It can be noted that the match that occurred on Sunday between Arsenal and Manchester City, with Arsenal losing, gives reason to take a closer look. Arsenal is getting close to losing out, especially with the tight scores against Man City.
Lineker shared that the title might end up being decided by just a goal difference.
“It (Premier League title) may be down to goal difference, and it is very, very close.”
He also shared that he still believes Arsenal has a chance if they really push.
Nigerian player Alex Iwobi reportedly got injured in the match against Brentford that happened on Saturday.
He was then replaced in the match, and his manager, Marco Silva, expressed concern but has hopes that the player will be fine and will recover quickly for their matches this season.
Iwobi has given 4 goals and 3 assists for Fulham this season.
Real Madrid player Vinicius Jr makes headlines as he reaches a milestone for the most assists in the Champions League.
It can be noted that the player who previously held this title was Lionel Messi, and now Vinicius has broken the record.
The player has a record of 13 assists in the UCL, while Lionel Messi’s record was 12 assists.
