2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana Secure Big Wins
Here are the results from Match Day 5 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the African zone, played on Friday.
In Group C, Nigeria secured a 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali, thanks to two first-half goals from Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen. The win moved Eric Chelle’s team to fourth place with six points. South Africa also defeated Lesotho 2-0 to take the top spot in the group.
In Group G, Algeria earned a 3-1 victory over Botswana, while Burundi lost 0-1 to Côte d’Ivoire. Ghana delivered a dominant performance, crushing Chad 5-0, and Guinea played to a goalless draw with Somalia.
Group H saw Equatorial Guinea claim a 2-0 win against São Tomé and Príncipe. In Group A, Burkina Faso thrashed Djibouti 4-1, while Egypt edged Ethiopia 1-0.
In Group B, DR Congo secured a narrow 1-0 win over South Sudan. In Group E, Morocco, the 2025 AFCON hosts, defeated Niger 2-1.

Mbaye Diagne Backs Osimhen to Break Turkish League Record
Former football player, Mbaye Diagne, advised Osimhen to break his long-standing record in the Turkish Super Lig.
The player has the highest scoring record in the league as a foreigner, and shared that Osimhen can also beat it. The record has been standing since 2018-2019.
He had 30 goals and shared why it may be possible: “Nobody has broken my goal record in the Super League. They probably won’t be able to. I could only accept it if my friend Osimhen.”

Galatasaray VP Says Arsenal Were Shocked Over Victor Osimhen Transfer Costs
Vice President of Galatasaray, Abdullah Kavukcu, shared that when Arsenal F.C. made enquiries about the transfer of Victor Osimhen, they were shocked.
He shared that they were shocked due to the financial aspect.
“I wouldn’t sell him for €150 million, but ultimately, it is a decision for our president to make. When you sell him, you must also find a replacement player. This is crucial.
“The Arsenal sporting director visited recently and was surprised that we were committing these amounts. Their budget stands at €800 million. Our budget for this year will be €500 million.”

Chelsea’s McFarlane Explains Why Liverpool Match Ended in a Draw
Chelsea’s Calum McFarlane has spoken about the club’s recent match against Liverpool, sharing his thoughts on why the game ended in a draw.
According to McFarlane, Chelsea were effective in several areas during the match, especially on the right side of the pitch. He praised Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto for causing problems for Liverpool with their movement and link-up play.
He named the two players as key reasons Chelsea were able to secure the result.
“I think we were effective on both sides, in my honest opinion. I thought Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto caused them real problems with their rotation on the right,” McFarlane said.
