48 Dead in Niger Petrol Tanker Explosion, Victims Given Mass Burial
A tragic tanker explosion in Niger State has claimed the lives of 48 people, all of whom were laid to rest in a mass burial on Sunday in Agaie Local Government Area.
The deadly incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when a petrol tanker collided head-on with a truck carrying passengers and cattle from Wudil in Kano State.
The resulting explosion led to a devastating fire that engulfed both vehicles and claimed dozens of lives.
According to Abdullahi Baba-Arab, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the mass burial was necessary because the victims had been burnt beyond recognition, making individual identification impossible.
He further revealed that the initial death toll, which stood at 30, rose to 48 after further search and rescue efforts uncovered 18 additional bodies.
“During our ongoing search and rescue operations, we found 18 more bodies.
Unfortunately, all the victims were burned so badly that individual identification was not feasible, and so we conducted a mass burial,” Baba-Arab stated.
The horrifying accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. on the Lapai-Agaie road, roughly 2 kilometers from the Dendo community in Agaie LGA.
The intense inferno also claimed the lives of over 50 cattle that were being transported, along with the destruction of a crane truck and a pickup van that were caught in the blaze.
The full extent of the damage continues to unfold, as authorities investigate the cause of the collision and the scale of the devastation it left behind.
This tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, as families mourn the loss of loved ones, and residents come to grips with the scale of the disaster.
Emergency response teams are still working to assess the aftermath, and many are left asking how such a catastrophic accident could have occurred.
