FRSC Urges Nigerians to Embrace Bicycles for easy movements from one place to another

Published

on

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has called on Nigerians to adopt the use of bicycles as a practical and sustainable means of transportation. The appeal, which forms part of the commission’s efforts to reduce road congestion, lower carbon emissions, and promote healthy lifestyles, was made during a recent press briefing.

According to the FRSC, the growing population and increasing number of vehicles on the roads have contributed to significant traffic challenges in urban areas, leading to longer commute times and higher rates of accidents. The use of bicycles, they argued, presents a viable solution for reducing traffic congestion, particularly for short distances. Additionally, the commission highlighted the health benefits of cycling, which include improved cardiovascular fitness and a reduction in lifestyle-related diseases such as obesity and hypertension.

The FRSC also pointed out that cycling is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional modes of transport. With global concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability, the adoption of bicycles would contribute to reducing carbon footprints in Nigeria’s bustling cities. They further emphasized the cost-effectiveness of bicycles, noting that many Nigerians could benefit financially by cutting down on fuel and vehicle maintenance expenses.

However, the FRSC acknowledged that proper infrastructure, such as dedicated cycling lanes and safety awareness campaigns, must be put in place to encourage widespread use. They called on local governments to prioritize the development of such infrastructure, ensuring that cyclists can move safely across towns and cities.

In conclusion, the FRSC encouraged Nigerians to consider bicycles as an alternative mode of transport, not just for leisure but for daily commuting, to promote safer, healthier, and more sustainable cities.
