Former Argentine striker Sergio Agüero has taken legal action against FC Barcelona over unpaid wages amounting to €3 million.

The dispute stems from his 2021 contract termination, where the club allegedly failed to pay him the full sum owed following his early retirement from professional football.

Agüero, widely known for his successful career with Manchester City before joining Barcelona, signed a two-year contract with the Catalan club in 2021.

His move to Barcelona was highly anticipated by fans eager to see the Argentine star continue his prolific goal-scoring form.

However, Agüero’s time at the club was tragically cut short after he experienced severe heart problems during a LaLiga match against Alavés.

After only five appearances for Barcelona, the health scare forced him to make the difficult decision to retire from football in December 2021.

Upon announcing his retirement, Agüero reached an agreement with the club to terminate his contract prematurely.

This agreement was meant to ensure that the financial terms of his contract were honored despite his early exit from the sport.

However, it appears that Barcelona has not fulfilled its obligations, as Agüero claims that he is still owed €3 million in wages.

The unpaid sum has now become the subject of a legal battle, with Agüero filing a lawsuit earlier this year to recover the money.

According to a financial report released by FC Barcelona detailing their accounts for the 2023-24 season, the lawsuit is ongoing.

The report highlights the club’s continued financial struggles, as Barcelona has been managing a series of economic challenges over recent years, including large debts and a pressing need to reduce their wage bill.

Despite the club’s efforts to restructure its finances, the issue with Agüero remains unresolved, leaving both parties entangled in a legal dispute.

Agüero’s retirement was a significant loss to the football world, as he was one of the most successful strikers of his generation.

Having won multiple Premier League titles with Manchester City and becoming the club’s all-time top scorer, his move to Barcelona was seen as a final chapter in his illustrious career.

However, his retirement was not only unexpected but also deeply emotional, as health concerns forced him to step away from the game he loved.

Now, as Agüero seeks to settle his financial dispute with Barcelona, the case has shed light on the continued challenges faced by the club, which has struggled to balance its finances in recent years while dealing with various legal and contractual issues.
