Nigeria’s Catholic Church has strongly condemned the Federal Government’s alleged plans to legalize abortion, citing constitutional and moral concerns.

The controversy began when the Health Promotion Department of the Federal Ministry of Health reportedly considered decriminalizing abortion to increase access to safe pregnancy terminations and reduce maternal deaths.

Rev. Fr. Zacharia Nyantiso Samjumi, Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), expressed the Church’s displeasure in a statement.

He emphasized that legalizing abortion contradicts Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the right to life (Section 33).

Instead of promoting abortion, the Church advocates for education on reproductive health and human dignity.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has consistently championed human life protection through various communiqués and teachings.

The CSN urges Nigerians to reject abortion legalization, stressing the sacred dignity and love owed to every human being.

The one that is collecting tax without doing anything will come and share you rice and semolina. The one that is collecting ransom is doing giveaway on social media.”
