President Bola Tinubu has announced new measures to cut government spending and ensure disciplined financial management in Nigeria.

His latest directive limits ministers, ministers of state, and agency heads to three vehicles in their official convoys.

This aims to reduce unnecessary costs and promote better use of resources. No additional vehicles will be provided for their travel.

The President has also capped the number of security personnel for these officials at five: four police officers and one officer from the Department of State Services (DSS).

This change will lower the financial burden of security details.

These new rules build on earlier actions by President Tinubu to cut government costs.

In January, he reduced the number of officials travelling with him on foreign trips from 50 to 20 and on local trips from 50 to 25.

The Vice President’s team was also cut to five on foreign trips and 15 on local trips.

President Tinubu has asked the National Security Adviser to work with military, paramilitary, and security agencies to find ways to reduce vehicle and personnel deployment.

This review aims to eliminate waste and make better use of resources.

All officials affected by these measures must comply right away, showing the urgency of these reforms.

Analysts support these steps, noting they could lead to significant savings.

“These measures show the President’s commitment to responsible governance and fiscal prudence,” said Dr Yemi Ogunyemi, a leading economist.

The Federal Government has announced an extension of the NYSC programme. It can be noted that the NYSC camp orientation is usually for three weeks before the youths go out to gain experience, employment, and serve the country for one year.

“The first two weeks speak to laying a foundation on civic responsibility. The next two weeks will look at career mapping, basic accounting literacy skills, business planning and access to finance. The final two weeks, we intend to have focused corps-stream-specific training aligned with the corps member’s designated stream based on his choice, academic background and skills profile.”

The federal government reacted to claims stating that the new tax rules will be imposed on telecommunications and petroleum products for Nigerians.

“Those recommendations do not amount to government policy and are not binding on Nigeria. Decisions on tax matters are taken through established constitutional and legislative processes and are guided by national priorities and prevailing economic realities.”
