In an interview with well-known media personality Chude Jideonwo, actress and producer Ufuoma McDermott bravely opened up about her struggle with Stage 4 kidney disease.

Her journey with this challenging illness, she shared, has been marked by pain, hardship, and reflection.

The onset of her health troubles began after a heartbreaking loss – her younger brother passed away from kidney disease, a tragedy that left her not only grieving but also facing a medical crisis soon after.

Reflecting on her journey, McDermott explained that her illness started with a diagnosis of Stage 3 kidney disease, which could have been manageable if treated early.

However, the pressures of life and work led her to delay seeking help.

As a result, her condition worsened, progressing to Stage 4, an advanced stage of kidney disease that places severe strain on the body and mind.

McDermott acknowledged that her battle with kidney disease was intensified by years of painkiller use.

Chronic pain, which she had endured for years, made painkillers a constant in her life.

While they offered temporary relief, this dependency became harmful over time, causing more damage than she initially realized.

She recalls her lowest points, saying that just last year, she truly feared for her life as her health spiralled, and she came face-to-face with the possibility of dying.

“I had really pushed my body, and by the time I was diagnosed, I was already bordering on Stage 4,” she admitted.

“Last year was incredibly difficult; there were times I genuinely thought it was over for me.”

The actress, who has been quietly battling chronic kidney disease for more than a decade, reflected on the personal and professional toll it took on her, not just physically but emotionally and mentally as well.

Chude Jideonwo, who has long been known for his candid and empathetic interviews, provided a safe space for McDermott to share her story.

Known for exploring people’s emotional journeys and struggles, Jideonwo brought out her story in a way that shed light on the often-overlooked impact of kidney disease and the realities of living with chronic illness.
