In light of recent developments concerning the arrests made during protests against poor governance, Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has stepped in to seek clarification and further details about the situation.

The Attorney General noted that the Nigerian police have brought several individuals before the courts, accusing them of various offenses, including treason.

This legal action follows a series of arrests related to protests that escalated into violence, with demonstrators voicing their frustrations over governance issues, economic hardships, and widespread public discontent in Nigeria.

Prince Lateef Fagbemi expressed that he has officially requested the case file from the Nigerian Police to be handed over to the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF).

This transfer is scheduled for Saturday, November 2, 2024, which he believes will allow for a thorough examination of the details and an informed assessment of the situation.

While the defendants are currently held in detention centers, the court has postponed proceedings until January.

Nevertheless, the Attorney General indicated his intention to try to expedite this process and potentially move the court date earlier.

Fagbemi’s directive aims to address both public interest in the case and the ongoing concerns regarding the prolonged detention of those involved in the protests.

Although the Attorney General has initiated these steps, he clarified that he does not possess the authority to change the court’s decisions regarding the remand of the defendants or to reschedule the court dates.

However, he remains hopeful that the DPPF’s involvement will lead to a reassessment that could bring the case before the court sooner than the originally set date in January.
