“Lawyer by Day, Rapper by Night” – Falz Reflects on His Double Life
Nigerian singer and rapper Folarin Falana, widely known as Falz, has opened up about his unique journey from practicing law to pursuing music.
During a conversation on the Madam Joyce podcast, Falz shared how he juggled the demanding roles of being a lawyer during the day and a rapper by night.
Reflecting on that phase of his life, Falz admitted it was a challenging balancing act, as both careers required immense dedication.
He also touched on the legal profession’s unwritten rules, which discourage lawyers from engaging in other activities while practicing law.
This posed an additional hurdle for him as he navigated his dual passions.
Falz shared an amusing yet telling experience from his courtroom days.
“There was a time I was living this double life,” he said. “I’d go to court during the day as a lawyer and then perform or make music at night.”
He recounted a particular moment when his two worlds collided.
“I announced my appearance in court, saying, ‘With profound respect, my lord, the name is Folarin Falana, appearing for the plaintiff.’
The judge lowered his glasses and asked, ‘Counsel, are you not the one doing something else on the side?’”
This moment highlighted the tension between his burgeoning music career and the expectations of the legal profession.
Falz explained that within the legal community, there’s an unspoken expectation for lawyers to devote themselves solely to their practice.
“There’s a professional code of conduct in law that frowns upon engaging in other activities, and I was very aware of that,” he added.
