Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has revealed his unsuccessful attempt to secure the release of singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, who is in police custody.

The singer was reportedly transferred from Owerri, the Imo State capital, to Abuja on Tuesday after being rearrested by the Nigeria Police Force.

Speed Darlington’s latest troubles stem from allegations of cyberstalking and defamation involving Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ogulu.

Burna Boy, a Grammy-winning artist often regarded as one of the leading figures in Afrobeats, has been a source of inspiration to many but is now at the center of this legal controversy.

The allegations suggest that Speed Darlington made online statements that were perceived as defamatory toward Burna Boy, leading to the police action.

Adeyanju, known for his advocacy and bold stance on human rights issues, shared an update about the case on his official Facebook page on Wednesday night.

He confirmed meeting Speed Darlington in Abuja after the police moved him from Owerri.

However, his attempts to secure bail for the artist were unsuccessful.

He expressed his frustration with the situation, pointing out what he described as a contradiction in Burna Boy’s image.

Adeyanju noted that Burna Boy often portrays himself as a voice for the oppressed, referencing his music that highlights social issues and injustice.

Yet, according to Adeyanju, the artist appears to be using his influence to push for legal actions that could silence Speed Darlington.

Adeyanju wrote, “The Nigerian police brought our client, Speed Darlington, to Abuja from Owerri this evening, and I just met him.

They have refused to release him on bail over allegations of defamation against Burna Boy.

Burna Boy, who sings about oppression in his songs, is now using the police to oppress Akpi [Speed Darlington].”

Reality TV star and DJ, Tolanibaj, has advised some Afrobeats legends to consider stepping away from music if they have lost their spark.

Speaking in a video shared on her TikTok page, Tolanibaj said there is no shame in retiring, especially when putting out poor music only damages the strong brand they worked hard to build. Her comments come as fans continue to criticize the recent releases from Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy.

Tolanibaj said, “Why is it that Nigerian artists don’t know when to evolve or shift fully into business? If your music no longer connects with your fans, why not build on your legacy in other ways instead of letting yourself get dragged and compared to new-generation artists?”

She pointed to Olamide and Don Jazzy as examples of how veteran artists can transition into executive roles and stay respected.

She added, “Stop letting yourself be disrespected. If your old catalogue is A1, there’s no need to keep dropping weak songs. It’s better to retire gracefully or even become a lifestyle influencer than to water down your brand.”
