Okpebholo Swears in Three Judges Left Unsworn by Obaseki
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has made a significant move toward fulfilling his promises made during his inauguration by approving the swearing-in of three judges who had been overlooked by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
This decision comes after the three judges were among eight candidates cleared and recommended for appointment by the National Judicial Council (NJC) in June 2023, but were not sworn in before Obaseki left office.
The three judges are Ojo Maureen Osa, Godwin Jeff Okundamiya, and Edoghogho Eboigbe.
Their appointments are seen as crucial in reinforcing the state’s judiciary and upholding justice in Edo.
Okpebholo had made it clear in his inaugural address on November 12, 2024, that he was committed to ensuring that the judiciary functioned without unnecessary delays or hindrances.
During his speech, he directed the state’s Chief Judge, Daniel Okungbowa, to investigate why the judges were not sworn in by the previous administration, promising to take action swiftly.
A statement from the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Umar Ikhilor, confirmed that the three judges would be formally sworn in by Governor Okpebholo on December 2, 2024, at 1:00 p.m.
The ceremony will take place at the State Executive Council Chambers at the Government House in Benin City.
Ikhilor emphasized that this decision reflects the governor’s firm belief in the rule of law, the importance of the separation of powers outlined in Nigeria’s Constitution, and his commitment to ensuring that the judiciary is empowered to carry out its role in delivering justice.
