Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola admitted that Real Madrid’s early goal set the tone for their 3-1 Champions League defeat on Wednesday night.

Los Blancos entered the second leg with a narrow 3-2 lead, and within five minutes at the Bernabeu, Kylian Mbappe struck first, lifting the ball over Ederson.

Mbappe went on to score a stunning hat-trick before Nico Gonzalez pulled one back for City, but it wasn’t enough. Madrid sealed their place in the last 16 with a 6-3 aggregate victory.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Guardiola acknowledged that his team struggled after conceding so early. “We didn’t defend well, and from that point, it became more difficult,” he said.

He congratulated Real Madrid, admitting they deserved to go through. “It’s the first year we haven’t had a strong Champions League run. We have to accept it and fight to be here again next season.”

Guardiola also named Madrid as strong contenders for the title but noted that other top teams are still in the race. For now, City will shift their focus back to the Premier League.
